Remodeling your home is a long, strenuous process that can produce a lot of construction waste. If you’re replacing still-in-good-condition items like cabinetry or lighting, chucking it in the dump isn’t the best solution.

Habitat for Humanity Restores accepts donations of small and large items that are new or gently used. Items can include housewares, appliances, and building materials. Before you think about renting a dumpster, donate your items instead. When you donate to Habitat for Humanity, you are helping to create a better community and keeping your stuff out of the landfill.

No Dumpster Needed

What is Habitat for Humanity and How to Find Your Closest ReStore

Habitat for Humanity is a global non-profit organization that helps families in need. They serve all 50 states and 70 countries and aim to ensure families have a decent place to live. Families that partner with Habitat for Humanity work alongside volunteers to build affordable houses.

One way Habitat raises money and benefits the community is through its Restores. These stores accept donations of gently used home improvement and construction items and make them available for public purchase.

Enter your zip code into the search bar on this page to find the Habitat for Humanity Restore and donation drop-off nearest you.

Cabinets

Habitat for Humanity Restores accepts cabinets that are in good working condition. The drawers should open without any issues and be intact. The cabinets should also be clean. Be sure to remove the wall securing screws before donating.

Working Appliances

Donate any clean working appliances that are in good condition. Appliances include dishwashers, stoves, refrigerators, microwaves, window air conditioners, flat-screen televisions, and washing machines. If you are donating a fridge, it must be less than ten years old.

Ceiling Fans

Is it time to replace your ceiling fan? Habitat for Humanity would be grateful for your donation. Ensure it is in good working condition, and remember to include the mounting hardware.

Exterior and Interior Doors

All donated doors should be clean with no broken glass or holes and free of water damage. Habitat for Humanity will also accept sliding glass doors.

Electronics

Habitat for Humanity will accept your electronics, including printers, stereos, DVD players, phones, and flat-screen TVs. Except for TVs, electronics do not need to be in working condition. Broken items will be recycled.

Furniture

When it’s time to replace your furniture, consider Habitat for Humanity. They’ll find a new home for your items. Furniture must be in good condition without holes, tears, discoloration, stains, odors, excessive wear and tear, or pet damage. Types of furniture include chairs, couches, coffee tables, and bed sets without bedding. They may even come to your house and pick up your donations.

Metal

If you have metal lying around, Habitat for Humanity will take it off your hands and recycle this material.

Plumbing Fixtures

Plumbing fixtures are on Habitat for Humanity’s approved list. This list includes sinks, bathtubs, and toilets with tanks no larger than 1.6 gallons. All items must be clean and free from chips or stains.

Lighting

You can donate light fixtures to Habitat for Humanity if they are in good working condition. Make sure that all the parts are with the light fixture. LED and incandescent light bulbs are also accepted. Other items that you donate include light switches, covers, and wiring.

Lumber

Habitat for Humanity can recycle leftover lumber from your home improvement projects. Lumber includes plywood full to half sheets, milled lumber 6 feet or longer, trim/molding  6 feet or longer, siding in full boxes, shingles in whole bundles, gutters, sheetrock 4 inches or larger, any type of masonry, and floor and ceiling vents.
